Why we’re walking our walk for carers

The coronavirus crisis has had a devastating effect on carers. For many, the only light at the end of the tunnel is receiving their COVID-19 vaccination to give them the confidence that they are able to keep their older, disabled and seriously ill loved ones safe. For some, it will open up the possibility of accessing vital help and support for the first time in nearly a year.

But we know that attending even routine medical appointments can be difficult for carers when they are looking after someone. With your help, we can help carers to get to their COVID-19 vaccination appointments. From providing homecare for the person they care for to supporting them with their travel and transport – anything that they need to make sure that they and the person they care for can get to their COVID-19 vaccination appointments.

Come together with hundreds of others this March by signing up today from wherever you are.

There are three easy steps:

1. Choose your challenge

  • Steps – set your tracking device, such as your mobile phone or Fitbit and aim to walk a set number of steps over a set period in March, or a set number of steps per day.
  • Distance – use an app such as Strava to keep track of the distance of the miles or kilometres you aim to walk over a set period in March or set a number of miles to walk per day.
  • Time – using a watch, mobile phone or stopwatch, aim to walk for a certain amount of time over a set period in March, or set an amount of time each day.

Don’t have an app, tracker or mobile device? It’s your walk for carers, choose a challenge that makes sense for you! It might be walking up and down your stairs 31 times a day for 31 days!

2. Sign up to the challenge

Signing up to the challenge is completely free and there is no minimum sponsorship that we ask you to raise to take part.  But if you pledge to raise £50 we will send you a Caring Together T-shirt to wear with pride on your walk.  And if you hit £100 we will send you a water bottle to say thank you. Go to the Virgin Money Giving website and click on the Start fundraising button.

Fundraising towards your goal is part of the challenge and we’ll get in touch to give you plenty of ideas to help you get there.

Don’t want to set up a Virgin Money Giving page? Download a sponsorship form and let us know that you’re taking part.

3. Tell people about it

By phone, on email, through WhatsApp or on social media: let your friends and family know that you’re taking part in walk your walk for carers and ask them to sponsor you. Better yet, why don’t you encourage them to take part too? Don’t forget to tag Caring Together, using the hashtag #WYWFC2021 so we can see what you’re up to!

Whatever your reason for walking your walk for carers, every step you take will help us to make sure that carers can get to their COVID-19 vaccination appointments, bringing them closer to a world in which their loved ones are safe.

Staying safe

Whether you’re taking part individually, with friends, family or colleagues, you’re all part of our walk the walk team. It is important that in taking part you keep yourself and others safe by adhering to all current government guidance and restrictions in relation to COVID-19. Walk your walk for carers has been designed with your safety in mind. Please choose your challenge carefully, so as not to put yourself or others at risk.
